Poland bans smartphone use in primary schools as academic year begins

Poland implemented a nationwide ban on smartphone use in primary schools on September 1, the start of the new academic year, covering public and private schools across the country. The restriction applies during lessons, breaks and other school activities, including classes held away from school premises.

The policy was approved by the Polish government and took effect at the beginning of the school year. Legislation concerning the ban was sent to parliament for final approval in June 2026.

Limited exceptions

Teachers may authorise smartphone use for educational purposes. Students may also use their devices when they need to contact parents during an emergency. A school principal can grant a temporary exemption when a student has a health condition or disability that requires access to a smartphone.

The restriction applies to school activities whether they take place on school grounds or elsewhere. Schools are expected to enforce it through disciplinary measures, including warnings, behavioural contracts and grade penalties.

Focus and debate

The government says the ban aims to reduce distractions and promote better focus among primary school students. The policy has been discussed and debated by educators, parents and policymakers in Poland.

Schools will therefore need to apply the nationwide rule while accommodating the stated exceptions for teaching, emergencies and students whose health condition or disability warrants temporary access. The measure covers primary school students from the first day of the 2026-27 academic year.
