Amazon begins another major round of corporate layoffs, cutting about 16,000 jobs

Amazon is carrying out another large reduction of its corporate workforce, trimming about 16,000 roles as it continues to reshape teams after years of rapid expansion. The cuts are described as a broad effort to simplify management structures, push more responsibility down to smaller teams, and remove internal processes that leaders believe slow execution. Employees affected in the United States are expected to get time to explore other roles inside the company, while those who do not land a new position will be offered severance and other transition support.

Company executives framed the move as part of a longer-running restructuring program rather than a one-off reaction to a sudden downturn. The strategy is consistent with a cost-control posture Amazon has taken since the post-pandemic period, when many technology and retail firms began reversing aggressive hiring. The company has said it will keep investing in “strategic areas” even as it reduces headcount in functions where it believes layers have accumulated.

The layoffs also land during a period of intense interest in generative AI across corporate America, with many large employers experimenting with tools meant to automate routine work. Amazon leaders have previously argued that newer AI systems will change how white-collar tasks are performed and could reduce the number of people needed in some office roles over time. Still, executives said the immediate motivation was organizational design, not near-term financial distress.

The job cuts follow earlier reductions announced in recent months, underscoring how far the company has moved from its pandemic-era growth posture. Amazon’s workforce grew rapidly as online shopping surged, then began contracting as consumers returned to stores and the company adjusted to slower growth. While investors have generally rewarded cost discipline, layoffs remain disruptive internally and can affect morale, especially when employees feel uncertain about which teams might be reorganized next.

Amazon did not publicly detail every business unit impacted by the cuts in the initial announcement. That ambiguity can create anxiety for employees who are not yet sure whether their teams will be affected. In parallel, the company said it plans to continue hiring in areas considered critical to its future, reflecting a common Big Tech pattern: reduce in mature or duplicative functions while expanding in priority initiatives.
