The World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos concluded this week after days of speeches, closed-door meetings and corporate pitches focused on economic growth, geopolitical risk and the politics of technology. The 56th gathering ran from January 19 to January 23, 2026, bringing heads of government and business leaders into the same rooms as investors and policy thinkers looking for clarity on a more contested global environment.

Discussions repeatedly returned to the question of whether the world economy is entering a period of structurally lower growth and higher volatility. Executives described persistent uncertainty around trade policy, energy security and supply chains, while many officials argued that industrial strategy and domestic investment would matter more than in the previous era of globalization.

Technology and innovation were also a dominant theme. Participants debated how quickly AI and automation should be deployed, who should set standards, and how countries can reconcile the promise of productivity gains with concerns about job displacement, misinformation and national security. Even in sessions framed as business and finance, the underlying assumption was that competitive advantage will increasingly be determined by data, compute and regulatory choices.

As Davos wrapped, the main takeaway for many attendees was that big decisions are becoming harder, not easier: political timelines are shortening, alliance structures look less stable, and companies are being forced to plan around sudden policy shifts. The forum’s organizers emphasized cooperation, but the mood suggested that risk management and resilience are now central to how leaders define economic strategy.
